Diversity is something I want to try to work towards at my school--I think it gives such a broader spectrum of American history and culture.Mrs. NChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01287615994237137896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5334595466332229231.post-57757154166999103962008-11-01T10:40:00.000-05:002008-11-01T10:40:00.000-05:00I was fortunate enough to have an AP English teach...I was fortunate enough to have an AP English teacher who made a concerted effort to think beyond the DWG list. Even though my high school was hardly diverse, we read works by Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Kate Chopin. He did throw in The Great Gatsby and Streetcar Named Desire for good measure, and I believe we had to stumble our way through Ethan Fromme. <BR/>Some works of literature are just iconical and students need to be aware of them- would be great for them to know just the gist and recognize their place in American history and culture.Mrs. Thttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17730747441676219265noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5334595466332229231.post-72564909920637991212008-10-30T10:52:00.001-05:002008-10-30T10:52:00.001-05:00Well said! My district is trying to include new books and authors to promote diversity, but it's really hard to do that at the junior level -- no one wants to overhaul canon for American Lit. *sigh*Midwest Teacherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17727866944918470933noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5334595466332229231.post-11149028597368116332008-10-30T10:52:00.000-05:002008-10-30T10:52:00.000-05:00Well said!
